@DieToPlay For a long time there have been ideas about creating a character management feature in-game, where there would not only be more avatar pictures but also in-game borders and titles. They could perhaps be bought with gold or be rewards from achievements and events. Either way, adding new avatar pictures should not be difficult, but it is time consuming.

On the old dev platform, there were only patch notes for the most part. Since release, we started posting all development updates in the updates section of the forums. Here is the most recent update:

That's essentially the replacement for the dev platform. One thing which is currently missing there are the updates for the test server, those are only being posted on discord right now, but we're planning on starting to post them on the forum aswell. For announcements, there's always been the "Announcements" subforum. We're definitely aware that we can substantially improve transparency and the communication between staff and the community in general. We're hoping to improve this with the upcoming community ambassador role.

A summary of this announcement is written at the bottom.

Greetings Skylords, Skyladies and other Skyfolk!

Over the past two months project progression has considerably slowed down and it has become apparent that the community is in need of a status update. This announcement aims to provide said status update, where we discuss what has happened the past few months, what the current status of the project is, what some of the roadblocks are and how we plan to alleviate them, what we are currently focusing on and what our plans and expectations are to move forward. We also take a more in-depth look at the current roadmap for new cards and card balancing, and newly added staff members.
General project state and current plans
Let us start by going back more or less 1 year. At that moment @Ladadoos and @Zyna were still only client developers and the only server developer, Kubik, had just left us. With no foreseeable new server developer and the server being in a very unstable state, Ladadoos and Zyna decided to step up and become server and client developers. For the next few months they worked many hours per day to fix as many game related issues as possible and bring the gaming experience to an enjoyable state so that Skylords Reborn could finally release. This lead to the project reaching an unsustainably high update throughput, likely giving false expectations for parts of the community for the future. Just before the project released the only two administrators, InsaneHawk and MrXLink, also stepped down from their role. The lack of a leading role started to show and considering Ladadoos and Zyna had the most involvement in the project at the time they stepped up to also become administrators. As a step in the process of re-structuring the team and improving work efficiency, we noticed that there was a clear need for extra designers. Game design has always been behind and with release coming, we needed to finish design decisions quickly. That is when @ImaginaryNumb3r joined which helped immensely and, alongside other designers, we were able to get game design to an acceptable state for release.
On December 18th, 2020 Skylords Reborn released. With this milestone achieved we decided to shift more of our attention to ensuring our servers properly handle the hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of concurrent players and to start implementing our first ever card balance changes! With the help of ImaginaryNumb3r, Zyna and the discord balancing server we released our first big card balance change on 1st of January, 2021. This was followed by a couple of extra updates, after which the project progression greatly decreased. ImaginaryNumb3r had to spontaneously spend a lot more time at his real-life job and Zyna and Ladadoos had to catch up with university duties like bachelor and master thesis. In the meantime other staff members have also had it busier than usual.
This leads us to where we are now. Two months without game updates and a community without a clear idea of the current state of the project. In the past few weeks we have internally discussed project health and team structure and decided to use the little time we currently still have into adding more team members to the project and improving code and workflow documentations. This process takes a lot of time which unfortunately comes at the cost of even slower game progression. Ever since we made our open staff applications page we have had many new applications come in and a lot of time has been spent processing them. Our goal is to expand the team such that we try to minimize the chances the project hits a complete halt again and as a result you can expect the team to grow in the upcoming weeks/months. We recently also added three new roles (discord moderators, community manager and event organizer) alongside the existing ones, which should improve the current project state. Feel free to have a look!
Faction design and new staff members
That being said, today we are most happy to announce the future for card balancing and potential new cards in Skylords Reborn. To us, card balance is of critical importance to provide new experiences and allow for greater deck building freedom in the game. To accelerate this process we are proud to announce that we have established a team of 5 people which are dedicated to improve the overall gameplay and deckbuilding experience.
With the introduction of this new team, we have created 2 new official titles:
     - Faction Designer: They explore the design space for card changes and create specifications which will be implemented.
     - Balance Developer: They implement features which were designed by Faction Designers or fix bugs of different sorts. They will also help map making in the future by adding new map specific units like bosses.
In other words: faction designers design the cards and balance developers implement them.
The team consists of the following members:
    - @RadicalX: Faction Designer with PvP focus
    - @WindHunter: Faction Designer with PvE focus
    - @Chibiterasu: Balance Developer
    - @Razeroc: Balance Developer
    - @ImaginaryNumb3r: Lead Faction Designer
    Expectations and steps moving forward
Experience has shown that working on balance and faction design is too work intense for just one developer at a time. As such, it goes without saying that you can expect more frequent balance iterations with card changes which won't only address balance, but also bugfixes and quality-of-life changes. Furthermore, we want to use our new resources for improved communication and greater transparency in terms of card and faction design.
Card changes are important steps to make the game more fun, but because there are so many ways one can adjust cards good design is everything. For PvE in particular our ultimate goal is to strengthen the identity of each faction (pure elements and hybrid factions) and give them their own signature playstyles. But for now, our efforts are best spend on cards which don't require a mechanical rework to make viable (like the Mutating Maniac buff). And for PvP, our new development resources allow our expert group (a group of hand-picked community members that help with design) to make faster progress and make more tests. In the future you can expect more detailed short and long-term goals for card balancing.
That is it for now. Thanks for your continued support the past few months and we look forward to what the future brings us!

    Summary
Developers and designers are very busy with real-life jobs and university. New open staff roles were made here as an attempt to keep the project progressing. These rules include discord moderators, community manager, event organizer, developers, designers etc. A lot of time is currently spent reviewing applications and making it easier to integrate new staff members. @Chibiterasu and @Razeroc were recently added to staff and are responsible to implement card changes designed by the new faction designers @RadicalX and @WindHunter. This should greatly speed up card/faction balancing.

    Patch #400026
    Greetings Skylords, Skyladies and Skyfolk,
this is a minor update that for the most part includes a few fixes for the server crashes which happened during the last couple of weeks, and also the new spectator maps which were published on the test server last week. We also handed out the boosters which were promised for the players who were experiencing issues during the server instabilities back in January, and to the players who participated in Toggy's last tournament with sponsored prizes. We're sorry for the people who had to wait for their boosters until now. If you're wondering why the frequency of updates has drastically decreased recently, please read this announcement:
    General changes
    - Fixed various causes of server crashes.
    - Added official spectator maps for the 1vs1 pvp maps. These maps are based on the recent reworks on the test server.
    - Added the completion date for achievements.
    - Reordered and added some loading screen hints. - translations done by LEBOVIM, Liorans, and Irisunna
    - Reworked russian translations for many UI-Texts (Mostly surrounding Quests) - translations done by Liorans
    - Removed Wazhai from the PvP ranked pool.
    General fixes
    - Fixed edge case where the UI would say that the player had an active booster discount when they did not.

We're expecting a downtime of around 30 minutes from approximately 8:30 to 9:00 CEST.

I would like to mention that the approach taken here is not the right one when it comes to notifying us of (unfair) bans. The best thing to have done would be to have created a Ban Appeal thread or to have contacted us on Discord using the staff bot (and not in public chat), as Ultrakool said.

We indeed have full history of all in-game transactions and can easily check the flow of resources between different accounts. We are more than willing to spend the time to investigate the case and unban if necessary, if you approach us through one of the two previously mentioned ways. But you need to have a little patience and should not expect an immediate answer from us.

  8. Ladadoos liked a post in a topic by Zyna in Introducing... Eirias, our new game designer!
    Greetings Skylords, Skyladies, and Skyfolks!

we are happy to announce another addition to our team today, @Eirias! As a game designer he will work on designing new quests and achievements, evaluating and improving match rewards and distribution, designing new ways to use currencies (gold being the more prominent currency), proposing improvements for a healthier economy (currency sinks for example), designing new progression systems or features etc.
We are glad to have him with us and we are looking forward to his contributions. On a side note, we are still looking for more volunteers! We would love to be able to provide new content at a more steady pace, and you can help us in various ways. You can have a look here:

    Best Regards,
    Skylords Reborn Team
  9. DevDanielson liked a post in a topic by Ladadoos in Skylords Reborn: Open Staff Positions
    Open Staff Positions
As a community driven project we constantly strive to improve Skylords Reborn and the experience for everyone involved. We cannot do this alone and that is why we have compiled this list of open positions which you could help us in! If a position is in this list then it means we are seeking for contributors for that position. Feel free to create a post in the appropriate sub-section by clicking on "Click here to apply" next to the position title if you think you can help us (do not apply by replying to this thread here). This also applies if you think you can help us but do not see a suitable position listed below. It is important you reflect on the desired traits mentioned for the role when you are applying, and explain why or how you would fulfil them. It is important to note that everyone is contributing to the project in their free time and that none of the positions are paid. If you have any questions, please do ask them and we will try to improve this page!
Each position has desired and bonus traits. Desired traits should be considered the most important traits for that position. They should not be seen as must-haves, but we have considered these traits to be important and ideally contributors for a certain position should have most of desired traits for that position. Bonus traits are extra traits a contributor could have but are by no means mandatory. The only thing that is mandatory is having a Discord account, as that is what staff members use to communicate with each other.
    The current positions are:
[Open] Marketeer / Outreach Coordinator [Open] Community Manager [Open] Game Server Developer  [Open] Game Client Developer  [Open] Fullstack Game Developer [Open] Game Designer [Open] 3D Tool Developer [Open] Balance Developer [Open] Backend Web Developer [Open] Frontend Web Developer [Open] Tool Developer (C#) [Open] Artist [Open] Event Organizer [Open] Video Editor [Open] Map Developer [Open] Map Artist [Open] Map Designer [Open] Map Tester [Closed] Faction Designer [Closed] Project Coordinator [Closed] Global Moderator [Closed] Discord Moderator
Listed below are desired and bonus traits that apply to all positions.
    Desired traits for all roles:
Have a Discord account or be willing to use one: Staff members primarily communicate using Discord.  Have time to spend on the project. As part of the team you will also be expected to join meetings, retrospectives and actively communicate with other staff members. This will require extra time contribution on top of working on your tasks. We expect you to regularly contribute, however real life comes first and we understand if you need to take breaks from the project. There are no hard requirements for how many hours you need to spend on the project per week, but it takes a significant amount of time to make impactful contributions. Able to work and communicate with a team. Teamwork and especially communication is very important for a project of this nature, considering everyone is contributing to the project in their free time. Your values should align with that of the team. Able to work independently and take initiative. Every staff member contributes remotely and even though everyone helps each other as much as possible, staff members cannot always be present and ready to help. Able to communicate in English.
Marketeer / Outreach Coordinator Click here to apply
As a Marketeer / Outreach Coordinator you are responsible to spread the word and create awareness about Skylords Reborn and to attract veteran and new players alike. This includes actively researching and reaching out to potentially interested streamers, youtubers, Discord channels, game magazines, among others. You will be responsible for the communication to and from interested parties and for any promotion deals (for example involving scratch codes). Please note that Skylords Reborn cannot do any paid promotions.
    Desired traits:
Good written and verbal communication skills in English. Demonstrable experience building public relations. This includes write e-mails or marketing posts and establish (and maintain) new relations. Bonus traits:
Speak other languages than English. Have existing relations with potentially interested parties.
Community Manager Click here to apply
As a community manager you are responsible with aiding the communication to and from the community. You will work closely with the Project Coordinator (previously Community Manager) to communicate staff and project decisions to the community through, for example, The Community Updates and self-written announcements. Furthermore, you will act as a contact person for the community to share project feedback and suggestions and are expected to keep the staff informed and be up-to-date with the state of the community.
    Desired traits:
Good written communication skills in English. Demonstrable involvement as a prominent figure in a (game) community. Trustworthy, open-minded and caring for the community and project health. Basic involvement with the project and BattleForge. Bonus traits:
Good verbal communication skills in English.
Game Server Developer Click here to apply
As a game server developer you are responsible to maintain and develop the game servers. This includes add new features, track and fix bugs, optimize code, roll out new server updates, improve server monitoring etc. The servers are written in C++17, use boost asio for networking, MySQL as database, Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring etc.
    Desired traits:
Demonstrable programming experience, preferably with C++17. Knowledge and/or experience with multi-threading and concurrency. Basic understanding of (game) networking. Bonus traits:
Experience with Kubernetes, MySQL, Docker, Prometheus, Grafana, Rust. Basic experience with Linux (Ubuntu). Basic knowledge of CI/CD.
Game Client Developer Click here to apply
As a game client developer you are responsible to maintain and develop the game client. This mostly includes add new pre-game features (content outside of matches, so no game mechanics) through .pak files used by the game. You will be responsible to create and design in-game interfaces for new features, add networking support for new features that require it, solve bugs etc. using LUA, XML and little bit of Rust. BattleForge uses LUA and XML in their .pak files which are loaded by the client. Communication with the server happens through a proxy written in Rust.
    Desired traits:
Willing to learn about how BattleForge works internally (files in .pak). Good programming experience with any language. Basic understanding of (game) networking. Bonus traits:
Basic Rust and LUA programming knowledge.  Experience modding in another game. Basic knowledge of CI/CD.
Fullstack Game Developer Click here to apply
As a fullstack game developer you are both a game server and client developer. This is the most optimal position to help in if you want to significantly contribute to the project as you will be able to develop independently on any changes game related. Due to the nature of the project developers usually cannot be frequently available and not having to rely on either a client or server developer can significantly increase the speed at which progression is made.
    Desired traits:
All desired traits listed under game server and client developer. Bonus traits:
All bonus traits listed under game server and client developer.
Game Designer Click here to apply
As a game designer you are responsible to evaluate the current game experience and research and propose improvements in a structured and methodological manner. This can be anything from design new quests and achievements, evaluate and improve match rewards and distribution, come up of new ways to use currencies (gold being the more prominent currency), propose improvements for a healthier economy (currency sinks for example), design new progression systems or features etc. In other words, anything in-game related except for cards and maps. The design space is big and there are a lot of possibilities but this must be discussed carefully with the developers due to possible technical limitations.
    Desired traits:
Demonstrable experience in game design. Good knowledge about BattleForge. Contribute in a structured manner and document and reason about why decisions were made.
3D Tool Developer Click here to apply
As a 3D tool developer you are responsible to solve one of our biggest technical challenges that will boost the project to the next level: the ability to modify existing 3D models. We already have an internal tool capable of adding new cards using existing re-textured models, but we have no way to meaningfully modify the geometry, animations and special effects. You will be responsible for researching the way BattleForge represents their 3D models and develop tools and a workflow capable of modifying different aspects of those models. The ultimate goal is to be able to add new models with animations and effects never seen before. There have already been very good community efforts and already a lot is known.
    Desired traits:
Demonstrable programming experience. Good experience with 3D file formats and their internal structure. Good experience with computer graphics relevant to 3D models. Comfortable analyzing a binary file using a hex editor. Bonus traits:
Experience with 3D modelling tools. Experience with reverse engineering.
Balance Developer Click here to apply
As a balance developer you are responsible to implement design changes to in-game cards using our internal balancing tool. In other words, you are responsible to implement new cards and changes to existing cards. These implementation requests can come from balance updates and content patches from our Faction Designers but also from the official Skylords Reborn map making team (for example, new bosses for a new map). An integral part of this role is learning our internal balancing tool, as that is the tool that allows us to perform all these changes. You are by no means required to have any programming experience.
    Desired traits:
Be interested in learning how BattleForge cards work behind the scenes. Comfortable working with technical domains: BattleForge's domain consists of numerous different technical models that can be overwhelming if you have not had a lot of exposure with technical domains. Basic experience with version control (Git). Be able to contribute on Windows: the tool only works on that operating system. Bonus traits:
Experience modding in another game. Experience programming with C# to help improve and maintain the tool.
Backend web developer Click here to apply
As a backend web developer you are responsible to maintain and extend the backend of our current and future web applications. The primary project you will contribute to is a feature rich platform which aims to provide various extensions and integrations for Skylords Reborn. As of now, this platform is for internal use only as the focus currently lies on creating internal moderation tools. However, after the moderation tools reach a satisfactory state, we plan to make this platform public and expand it with features like a new and improved cardbase, leaderboards, a system to download, manage and share your replays, and various other useful extensions. There is a lot of room to contribute in, as this platform is still in its early stages of development!
    Desired traits:
Demonstrable experience with Node.js and TypeScript. Basic knowledge of MySQL and Git. Basic sense for good security practices like input validation, authentication and authorization. Bonus traits:
Experience with Loopback 4, Docker or Visual Studio Code.
Frontend web developer Click here to apply
As a frontend web developer you are responsible to design and implement the frontend of the Skylords Reborn web platform and other web interfaces in the future. Desired traits:
Demonstrable experience with React and TypeScript. Bonus traits:
Basic Git and Docker knowledge. Experience with Visual Studio Code.
Tool developer (C#) Click here to apply
As a tool developer you are responsible to create and improve various tools which aim to optimize the user experience and also speed up the internal development process. You will first assist us in developing our new and improved updater by implementing the UI and extending the backend code.
    Desired traits:
Good WPF and XAML skills to create proper UIs. Knowledge in writing applications with the help of the MVVM pattern. Basic experience with UI/UX design. Bonus traits:
Experience with .NET Core - for future platform independent development. Knowledge in TDD. Experience with common data transfer methods (JSON, web protocols).
    Artist Click here to apply
As an artist you are responsible to create the visuals required for new content. This is a broad position and there are many areas where you could help in, depending on your skills and interests. Think of loading screen artwork for new maps, card artwork for new cards, visual UI elements for new features that involve adding UI to the game, banners for events/tournaments/community challenges/large game updates etc.
    Desired traits:
Able to show past work relevant for the area you wish to help in. Bonus traits:
Able to show past work similar in style to BattleForge or show the ability to adapt to the style used in BattleForge.
Event Organizer Click here to apply
As an event organizer you are responsible to design and organize official events and tournaments from start to finish. This process includes research for new and fun event ideas, design the event and rewards, promote and organize the event and ensure it runs smoothly as a whole. You are expected to create the media content (like videos or streams) that are expected with events and tournaments, or find a suitable community member for it. Furthermore, you will also be responsible for the communication from and to the community for anything event and tournament related and to guarantee all rewards are handed out accordingly. Lastly, as an event organizer you are also the contact person for unofficial community events and tournaments seeking for sponsorship from the project.
    Desired traits:
Demonstrable experience or interest designing and organizing events of any form. Solid knowledge about the different PvE/PvP maps and cards in BattleForge. Bonus traits:
    Experience as a content creator

    Desired traits:
Demonstrable experience editing videos and creating content. Bonus traits:
Experience with the BattleForge map editor to create cinematic scenes. Experience with highlight videos; extracting interesting parts from long streams into small videos. Experience with audio post production.
Map Developer Click here to apply
As a map developer you are responsible to script new official maps or alter scripts of existing maps as a cause of map balance updates. BattleForge maps are created using the BattleForge map editor and the scripts are written in LUA.
    Desired traits:
Experience with the BattleForge map editor and scripting in BattleForge. Bonus traits:
Experience with LUA. Experience modding in another game.
Map Artist Click here to apply
As a map artist you are responsible to polish the aesthetics of a map. This includes texture the map, add decorations and add different effects and sounds. In other words, responsible for making the map look and feel good.
    Desired traits:

    Discord Moderator Closed
As a Discord Moderator, you'll have a good variety of responsibilities regarding the communities health such as; engaging with the community from time to time whilst checking in on the social health. It's crucial to also understand that you'll be supporting standard inquiries such as what's allowed and not allowed within the discord. You will also be correcting those who breach the rules.
You are to remain as a balanced neutral party member no matter which side of the scenario you are on. This means you're required to understand the aspect and social atmosphere of the community and how they act instead of enforcing a different social environment for them.

  10. Kozzrazz liked a post in a topic by Ladadoos in Project status and card balancing

The primary project you will contribute to is a feature rich platform which aims to provide various extensions and integrations for Skylords Reborn. As of now, this platform is for internal use only as the focus currently lies on creating internal moderation tools. However, after the moderation tools reach a satisfactory state, we plan to make this platform public and expand it with features like a new and improved cardbase, leaderboards, a system to download, manage and share your replays, and various other useful extensions. There is a lot of room to contribute in, as this platform is still in its early stages of development!
    Desired traits:

    Desired traits:
Good WPF and XAML skills to create proper UIs. Knowledge in writing applications with the help of the MVVM pattern. Basic experience with UI/UX design. Bonus traits:
Experience with .NET Core - for future platform independent development. Knowledge in TDD. Experience with common data transfer methods (JSON, web protocols).
