Future of Skylords Reborn and intro to Ardent Peak

Update: We are no longer part of Ardent Peak. Due to differences in interest and vision of the direction of the project, we have since parted on good terms from Ardent Peak and gone our own way. Update from Ultrakool: Due to this separation and other circumstances most  of the information given in this thread is now outdated.

Greetings Skylords, Skyladies, and Skyfolks!

It's been a while since our last major announcement. However, since yesterday there has been some extremely big news. Now, we have been in touch with a friend of Blank, who owns an American Business called Ardent Peak. He managed to actually get in touch with Electronic Arts and have a talk with them regarding BattleForge.

This means that, after a correspondence with EA we are now allowed to run our project provided that we adhere to specific guidelines and do not claim we are affiliated with them. We will be developing the project under the company Ardent Peak. This is absolutely great news as we will have next to no complications with EA about the project are allowed to develop it freely. If they have any issues with what they are doing they will contact the owner of Ardent Peak rather than send us shutdown notices.

  • Skylords Reborn will be the name of a new custom server for the game BattleForge, originally developed by EA Phenomic, now hosted by Ardent Peak.
  • Electronic Arts allowed us to run this project, through Ardent Peak, permission to set up a server for the game (resources not provided). Skylords Reborn is now identified as a 100% legal project under an official business.
  • Ardent peak holds official responsibility and ownership of the project but the existing hierarchy remains the same under that; Blank and Hawk are founders, and them and I remain administrators/bosses of the project. I remain community manager and lead designer as well, and every other staff member retains their role as it was.
  • We have also been allowed to alter the BattleForge client to our desires, on a few conditions:
    • We are to remove EA's logo and name from our project, as Skylords Reborn is not affiliated with EA. We will be referring to Phenomic as the original developers of BattleForge.
    • We are not to release any paid DLC or paid updates for the game.
  • We ARE allowed to commercialise the game to the extent that we are allowed to gain money for the project, and this opens up quite some future opportunities.
  • We will never be making the game Pay2Win or Pay2Play.
  • We'll be able to alter the server in such a way to release additional content but NOT completely new versions or new game editions, as that would fall under the DLC/Updates part mentioned above. New card editions and maps are a possibility, however! Remember though, we are still currently focused on getting the game up to its original state first and foremost.
  • We are considering upping the marketing aspect of our project, which may result in possible advertising and/or kickstarter projects.
  • We will be cranking up development a lot, in order to get the game to you guys as soon as we can.
  • We are in touch with EA in case there are any questions and issues.
  • We will be thinking about all these decisions carefully and further news will follow in the future.
  • Donations are now up again and properly referred to Ardent Peak
  • Future possibilities for the game are aplenty!

We are all really excited to bring you this news and it creates a whole new, brighter and closer future for the entire Skylords Reborn project, and it has caused massive new opportunities to arise for us. We're heading in the right direction and we hope to be bringing you all into the forge as soon as we can. Know that aside from the aforementioned list, the project and its directions stay the same, and I will be updating the FAQ accordingly once further decisions have been considered.

Finally, I would like to add a message from Ardent Peak:

Quote

We'll be seeing some awesome changes and momentum in the next couple of weeks. Lets keep the community and interest alive. We'll stop using "Soon" as a deadline and start running with actual timelines. We'll keep giving you constant updates and we appreciate everyone that's passionate about this project.

Thank you all, mighty Skylords, for your continued support in our endeavours. Keep the hype up, stay awesome, and we hope to be carrying this community into a bright, opportunity-filled future, but most importantly... into the Forge! We're all in this together and we'd be nowhere without you guys, so thanks again for all your support, keep it up and we will open the gateway to Nyn once more, united as one!

@Ardent PeakSounds awesome. We cannot be grateful enough for your involvement! Few Question though. How did Ardent Peak come to be involved in this project? Will they be adding staff to the project? Hosting the Servers? Handling the distribution of money? The "Company Manager" role that was wanted before wont exist anymore now that we got a actual LLC ArdentPeak taking care of this right?

What does this mean? What's defined as a complete edition?

We're talking about completely new game editions there, that would qualify as us making a new BF game which we do not. Card editions are a possibility though! I've edited the topic accordingly :)

Back at the time the community was dead sure it was not possible to have EA somewhat approve of the project, and that they were going to shutdown the project sooner or later. But then I contacted EA regarding the project and they didn't mind having you guys open a private server for the game. The hype at the time was unreal, we were all unbelievably happy.

Then yet again later on, you got in contact with EA and made an agreement regarding the private server and how you will be changing the project's name, handling copyright issues etc, basically a second confirmation.

And now, you have proven that it is possible to do anything, by being under a registered LLC domain which would allow you to expand even further.

That is why I am saying it is always possible to own the trademark for the game in the future. May take time, but it is not impossible. Those three occasions I have mentioned above were told to be impossible previously, and were proven wrong over time thanks to your hard work and dedication.

Great job, and I do really mean it. I have been here since the start and have seen it all, it was never easy but you were up to it. We all appreciate it.

We will be able to enjoy the game once again all together, soon!

Yay name game as Skylords Reborn vcs EA is lurking for moar FIFA money. Now praise EA bcs they granted access to thrown out game idea. And how in the name of God Emperor did anyone thinks that Origin is good platform for your games? They killed both Titanfall's, Dragon Age, Command and Conquer's. Imagine world where u have to buy DLC's for breathing. Skylord's Dev team should avoid EA and anything even remotly connected with them as Redwood is red bcs of the blood and tears of the fans of good games that being killed in the name of MOAR NHL's. I dont give a damn if u need 2 years or 5 years to complete it. If the game will have EA logo in it i wont even touch it.

Rage about EA aside, which I do not encourage, you won't be seeing their logo in it as they don't publish Skylords Reborn and we are not affiliated with them as stated in the main post. What you will see, however, is Phenomic's logo as they developed the original game and we are to credit them for that.

You gotta realize EA didn't have to do this. Rather than complaining, you could show some grattitude to the creators of this project, the staff, to Ardent Peak, the community AND even EA. As sad and dissapointing it was seeing the game die back in the old days, it's nice to see it come back and EA is not standing in the way. It's enough to be at least a bit thankful for :)

So what of microtransactions? I'm assuming by this statement you are never going to allow the purchasing of packs a la original Battleforge. Do you believe you will be trying to implement any microtransactions now that it's legal for you to do so?

They shouldnt have shut the original game down in the first place, but they are only about money and this game was not making enough for them, because the fucked up the whole business model and couldn't care less about it.

Yes, this move was nice from EA. Yes, they seem to be getting better. But one of these "okay guys, we won't kill you legally, and you can keep working on our trash that we threw away because we are stupid" will not solve the problem.

It was a nice move. But I still have plenty of reason to hate this company with a passion. And I'm not the only one.

Phenomic was effectively a different group from what you call "EA" as a whole. Remember, Battleforge died because Phenomic TANKED. The group keeping the game running died, and the game went down with them. EA maybe could have picked it up, but at that point it was dead. Playerbase would've been sub-500 people. The game was getting no love because Phenomic was actively bleeding resources for years. Do you really think EA could have resuscitated it?

I get the EA hate, but ffs this is the dumbest place you could froth about it.
